Egypt: 'Six Dead' As Morsi Supporters Protest

Thousands of supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi have marched in cities across Egypt to demand his reinstatement.

The marches were the largest in two weeks after a security crackdown killed hundreds of protesters.

The Reuters news agency said six people had died and 50 were injured, citing a security source.

Police fired tear gas at protesters in Cairo as some demonstrators burned tyres and hurled objects at the officers.

Before the rallies the government had warned that security forces posted at key intersections would open fire if protests turned violent.

The largest protest in the capital involved more than 10,000 supporters of Mr Morsi, the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood who became the country's first democratically elected president.

Since he was removed from office the military-backed government of General Abdel Fatah al Sisi has cracked down on the Brotherhood and its supporters.

Protesters marched through the streets chanting slogans against Mr Sisi. Many waved the Egyptian flag and carried pictures of Mr Morsi.

"The people want the death of the assassin!" the protesters chanted.

Thousands gathered in Alexandria and other cities, with smaller protests drawing hundreds, including many women and children.

Some Morsi supporters showed four fingers - a symbol in online and street campaigns to remember the protest around the Rabaah al-Adawiya mosque, which in Arabic means fourth.

"When it started, it was only about the return of Morsi to power," protester Ahmed Osama said. "Now it has gone past that. Blood has been shed."

The Brotherhood, which gave Egypt its first civilian president in Mr Morsi after the rule of the military-backed Hosni Mubarak, says it remains committed to peaceful resistance.

Much of its leadership has been detained including Mr Morsi.
