Nelson Mandela Still Being Treated In Hospital

The South African presidency has confirmed that Nelson Mandela is still being treated in hospital in Pretoria following reports he had arrived home.

The former South African president was admitted on June 8 with a recurring lung infection.

A statement from the office of President Jacob Zuma said Mr Mandela was in a critical but stable condition.

"At times his condition becomes unstable, but he responds to medical interventions," it added, repeating a medical bulletin it had issued a week ago which had said the ailing Nobel Peace Prize laureate was showing "great resilience".

Mr Mandela celebrated his 95th birthday in hospital on July 18 and was showered with tributes from around the world.

Mr Zuma has been urging people to pray for Madiba and keep him in their thoughts. Madiba is Mr Mandela's clan name.

Sky correspondent Emma Hurd, in Johannesburg, said Mr Mandela "effectively has a hospital ward" in his house so if he is discharged his team of doctors will be able to monitor him around the clock.

The ailing hero spent nearly three decades in prison before being released and being elected South Africa's first black president in multi-racial elections in 1994 that ended apartheid rule.
