The SpaceX company has successfully launched a fresh load of supplies to the International Space Station but its attempt to land the leftover booster on a barge did not fare as well.
SpaceX's billionaire founder Elon Musk says the first stage of the unmanned Falcon rocket made it to the platform floating some 200 miles off Florida's northeastern coast.
But he says the booster came down too hard and broke apart.
It is the first time anyone has tried anything like this.
According to Mr Musk: "Close but no cigar this time." But he says it bodes well for the future.
The Falcon rocket was launched at Cape Canaveral at 9:47 GMT.
The primary mission for SpaceX is delivering more than 2,300 kilograms (5,000 pounds) of food, experiments and other items to the orbiting space station.
Tuesday's scheduled launch of the Dragon cargo ship was aborted due to rocket trouble.
