Ukrainian Refugees Flee To Russian Arctic

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 25 Oktober 2014 | 23.17

By Katie Stallard, Russia correspondent, in Murmansk

More than 800,000 refugees have crossed the border into Russia since the start of the year, according to the UN's refugee agency (UNHCR).

At least a quarter of a million are thought to be displaced inside Ukraine.

With the country heading to the polls on Sunday for parliamentary elections, the situation in the east remains dangerously unstable, despite the ceasefire supposedly in place.

Larisa and Evgeniy Golubyatnikova fled the fighting near Donetsk in August with their two children - three-year-old Margarita and her 13-year-old brother Vadim.

They told me their village was surrounded and they could hear shelling close by.

They had to leave so quickly they could only bring the children and a single suitcase.

"Do you like it here in the north?" Larisa asks her daughter.

"I like it in Ukraine," Margarita replies.

"They are shooting there, it is scary," her mother tells her.

The family is living in one room of a college dormitory in the northern city of Murmansk.

Some 72 Ukrainian refugees have been housed here, the youngest of whom is just six months old.

It was the only destination on offer for relocation when they arrived in the crowded refugee camp in Southern Russia this summer, but they decided it was better than staying at the camp.

Within 24 hours they were on board a plane bound for the Arctic.

"We don't have anyone here," Larisa explained, "That is why it is hard and scary.

"I think after a move like this one, nothing can scare us anymore."

Her husband, Evgeniy, added: "The only comfort is that there is a peaceful sky over our head now.

"It was hard, even unbearable to stay there. We did it for our children."

Located north of the Arctic Circle, winters in Murmansk can be tough. For six weeks of the year it will be completely dark, the temperature regularly drops below -20C.

But the family has found warmth amongst the people - volunteers have donated winter clothes and done their best to make them feel welcome.

"Margarita misses her granny, especially after speaking to her on the phone," Larisa told us.

"We told her that we left from where they were shooting, that here it is better here."

Adjusting to their new life in the Arctic has not been easy - the college accommodation is only temporary, and they still need somewhere permanent to stay.

But the family thinks their children will have a better future here than in Ukraine.

Google Executive Sets New Freefall Jump Record

By Sean Dilley, Sky News Reporter

A senior Google executive has set a new record for the highest parachute jump at more than 135,000 feet (41,000 metres).

Fifty-seven-year-old Alan Eustace was lifted from an abandoned runway at an airport in New Mexico to the edge of space by a balloon filled with 35,000 cubic feet (990 cubic metres) of helium.

It broke the previous record, a 128,100 foot freefall achieved by 45-year-old Felix Baumgartner in October 2012.

Unlike the former record holder, who was 14 years his junior when he set the previous record, Google's senior vice president of knowledge chose to make his attempt in secret.

Mr Eustace spent two hours and seven minutes climbing to an altitude of 136,401 feet (41,575m or nearly 26 miles). He began his freefall at 135,890 feet.

Wearing a self-contained space suit similar to those used in the international space station, the computer scientist used an explosive device to separate himself from the balloon which elevated him.

He descended towards the earth at speeds which peaked at more than 800mph, breaking the sound barrier and creating a sonic boom.

After landing, he said: "You could see the darkness of space and you could see the atmosphere, which I had never seen before.

"It was a wild, wild ride."

Mr Eustace has spent 34 months of secret planning and training with a team from Paragon Space Development Corporation to prepare for his four-and-a-half minute freefall.

Company CEO Grant Anderson said: "Together, Alan and the team extended human space flight to the stratosphere in an important step to solidify the safety of future human endeavours."

"This has opened up endless possibilities for humans to explore previously seldom visited parts of our atmosphere."

Five Experimental Ebola Vaccines Set For Trial

Trials of a possible Ebola vaccine could begin in West Africa in December with the vaccine more widely available in the first half of next year.

World Health Organisation (WHO) assistant director general Marie-Paule Kieny said: "Before the end of first half of 2015...we could have available a few hundred thousand doses. That could be 200,000 - it could be less or could be more."

She was speaking after WHO held talks about potential vaccines with health experts, officials from Ebola-affected nations and pharmaceutical firms.

There is currently no proven vaccine against the deadly virus and drug companies have previously avoided investing too heavily in a cure because outbreaks before this year's had been small.

West Africa's Ebola outbreak began in March and has killed more than 4,900 people, most of them in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, according to the WHO.

Video: Ebola: Busting The Myths

It believes that up to 1.4 million people could have been affected by 2015 and there are also fears the virus may be used as a weapon of bio-terrorism.

Two leading vaccine contenders are already in trials, with another five to begin trials next year.

US firm Johnson & Johnson have already said they aim to produce at least one million doses of their vaccine next year and UK-based GlaxoSmithKiline is also working on a vaccine called ChAd3.

GSK's chief executive Sir Andrew Witty said earlier that this week's meeting of health experts should discuss ways to make sure all drug companies worked together to get the vaccine out.

Islamic State Accused Of Using Chemical Weapons

The US is investigating claims that Islamic State militants have used chemical weapons against security forces in Iraq.

Three Iraqi officials have told the AP news agency that IS fighters used chlorine bombs during clashes last month in the Iraqi towns of Duluiya and Balad, north of Baghdad.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said around 40 troops and Shia militiamen were affected. They were treated at a hospital and recovered quickly.

The Washington Post also reported that 11 Iraqi police officers were taken to hospital north of Baghdad suffering from dizziness, vomiting and shortage of breath.

The newspaper said the symptoms were found to be consistent with chlorine poisoning following an alleged IS gas attack.

It added that Iraqi forces claimed two other crude chlorine gas attacks have taken place in recent months, but the details surrounding the allegations were still unclear.

Secretary of State John Kerry said he could not confirm the claims but that the US was taking them "very seriously".

"These allegations are extremely serious and we are seeking additional information in order to be able to determine whether or not we can confirm it," he told reporters.

"The use of any chemical weapons is an abhorrent act, it's against international law, and these recent allegations underscore the importance of the work that we are currently engaged in."

The latest allegations follow reports that IS militants released some form of toxic gas in the embattled Syrian border town of Kobani on Tuesday, where Kurdish fighters have been battling a month-long offensive against the extremist group.

Kurdish officials, who have made similar allegations before, said they lacked the equipment to officially identity the chemicals used.

The claims could not be independently verified, although UN investigators earlier this year said they were virtually certain that chlorine had been used as a chemical weapon in northern Syria.

A US-led coalition is currently engaged in airstrikes against IS targets in Iraq and Syria. The UK has bombed IS targets in Iraq, but has not taken part in the Syrian strikes.

Allied aircraft pounded a further 12 targets in Iraq on Thursday and Friday and six near Kobani, a US military source said.

France, meanwhile, has revealed that allied forces dropped around 70 bombs in Iraq on Thursday night in a large-scale operation.

The target was a weapons supply area and training centre in the Kirkuk region of northern Iraq, France's chief of the defence staff Pierre de Villiers said.

"I think it's safe to say we hurt them last night. The operation is a success," he told French radio.

Overall, US and allied aircraft have flown nearly 6,600 sorties in Iraq and Syria and dropped more than 1,700 bombs, the US military said.

The airstrikes have helped Kurdish militia defending Kobani to hold out against the more heavily armed jihadists but have not stopped IS making new gains in parts of Iraq.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday announced that 1,300 Free Syrian Army fighters would be joining Kurds in defending Kobani.

Attacker Among Two Dead In School Shooting

By Sky News US Team

A school student who went on a shooting spree before killing himself wrote a series of chilling tweets in the months before he ran amok with a gun.

Jaylen Fryberg opened fire in a cafeteria, murdering one teenager and critically injuring three others at Marysville-Pilchuck High School in Marysville, about 35 miles north of Seattle, Washington.

The gunman was reported to be initially "quiet" before opening fire on fellow diners.

Each of the 15-year-old's victims have gunshot wounds to the head, and the two teenage boys hurt in the attack, Nate Hatch, 14, and Andrew Fryberg, 15, were cousins of the killer.

The teenage girl who remains in a critical condition has been named locally as Shaylee Chuckulnaskit, whose uncle told local TV station KIRO that "he wasn't sure she'd make it".

Calvin Walker, who was in the cafeteria at the time, added: "I didn't think there was any hope of them being OK because of how close he shot them. I knew it was going to be bad."

  4. The attacker took his own life in the incident at Marysville-Pilchuck High School in Washington state

  5. Three young people are in a "very critical condition" and one other is in a serious condition

  6. Witnesses said the freshman took a gun out of his backpack in a cafeteria and opened fire

  7. TV footage showed students being evacuated from the school, which has about 2,500 enrolled

  8. Armed police conducted room-to-room searches with guns drawn

  9. A vigil was held on Friday night at a church close to the school

  10. School is closed for students and teachers next week, in respect for the victims

  11. One student has said that everyone is affected by the shooting in one way or another

Another student said: "At first I thought it was just someone making a really loud noise, like a bag, like a pretty loud pop, until I heard four more after that, and I saw three kids just fall from the table like they were falling to the ground dead."

Eyewitnesses have told reporters that a new teacher at the school, Megan Silberberger, tried to intervene during the shooting spree.

They claim the Social Studies tutor managed to restrain his arms, but during the struggle, the gun fired again, leaving Fryberg with a fatal wound to the neck.

The teenager left a series of posts on Twitter before his attack which painted a picture of a boy who was familiar with using weapons.

Next to an Instagram picture of him holding a hunting rifle, he wrote: "Probably the best BirthDay present ever! I just love my parents!!!!"

In August, he issued a threat to an apparent love rival, saying: "Your not gonna like what happens next."

On 18 September he wrote: "Did you forget she was my girlfriend?" and later tweeted: "Dude. She tells me everything. And now. I... hate you! Your no longer my brother."

On Tuesday, one of a series of tweets said: "It breaks me... It actually does... I know it seems like I'm sweating it off... But I'm not.. And I never will be able to."

In his last post on Thursday, Fryberg stated: "It won't last... It'll never last..."

Fryberg was crowned the school's freshman "homecoming prince" just a week ago, according to some US media.

On Friday night, a candlelit vigil was held for the victims of the school shooting in a nearby church.

The high school is going to be closed throughout next week out of respect for the injured.

Canada Terror Attack Gunman Was Not Tracked

The gunman who killed a soldier at a war memorial and then opened fire inside Canada's parliament building had not been under surveillance, police admit.

Michael Zehaf-Bibeau had wanted to travel to Syria but was not on a list of around 90 "high-risk" individuals.

Police say the 32-year-old Muslim convert had a passport application delayed over concerns about extremism.

CCTV footage shows people fleeing as Zehaf-Bibeau ran into the country's parliament complex in the capital Ottawa on Wednesday.

After entering the building, he opened fire before being shot dead by Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers, who has been hailed as a hero.

Moments earlier Zehaf-Bibeau shot and killed 24-year-old reservist Nathan Cirillo at the National War Memorial.

The slain soldier was given a hero's send-off in Ottawa on Friday, with members of his regiment marching in procession before a motorcade bound for his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario.

Video: Dramatic New CCTV Of Attack

Police earlier said Zehaf-Bibeau had a criminal record for violent and drug-related offences.

"He is an interesting individual in the sense he had a very developed criminality," said Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Commissioner Bob Paulson.

Commissioner Paulson said he also had a history of "violence and of drugs and of mental instability".

He added the delay over Zehaf-Bibeau's passport application may have been one of the reasons why he carried out the attack.

Video: Canadian Police News Conference

"I think the passport figured prominently in his motives and his - you know I'm not inside his head - but I think it was central to what was driving him."

An email from Zehaf-Bibeau was found on the hard drive of a person who has been charged with a terrorism-related offence in Canada, the RCMP said.

Authorities say Zehaf-Bibeau acted alone and the Ottawa attack is not being linked with the killing of another soldier in Quebec on Monday.

His mother, Susan Bibeau, said she was crying for the victims of the shooting, but not her son.

Video: Ottawa Not Intimidated By Attack

"We have no explanation to offer. I am mad at our son, I don't understand and part of me wants to hate him at this time," she said.

She added that her son was a social misfit who had lost his way.

"(He) was lost and did not fit in," Ms Bibeau said in a statement given to Associated Press.

"I, his mother, spoke with him last week over lunch, I had not seen him for over five years before that."

Video: Brother's Pride For Shooting Hero

It has emerged Zehaf-Bibeau was not among 93 high-risk people being monitored by authorities.

Police were asked to carry out background checks when he applied for the passport, but he had not been placed under surveillance.

A former friend who once lived with Zehaf-Bibeau at a shelter for the homeless in Vancouver said he had once tried unsuccessfully to get off drugs.

"We referred to him as Muslim Mike. He didn't seem like a bad guy," Steve Sikich told the Reuters news agency.

Mr Sikich said he last saw Zehaf-Bibeau "a month or two ago", adding he wanted to travel to Libya and join Islamic State.

Human Remains Are Missing Student Hannah Graham

Police say remains found in a dried-up creek in rural Virginia are those of British-born student Hannah Graham.

A skull and bones were discovered in a heavily wooded area five weeks after the 18-year-old vanished in Charlottesville, a college town about 100 miles southwest of Washington DC.

Her parents, John and Sue Graham, said in a statement: "When we started this journey together we all hoped for a happier ending.

"Sadly that was not to be. We are devastated by the loss of our beautiful daughter.

"Although we have lost our precious Hannah, the light she radiated can never be extinguished."

The University of Virginia student, who moved from Britain to the US when she was five, vanished on September 13 after a night out with friends.

She left an off-campus party alone and then texted a friend saying she was lost, police said.

In CCTV footage, she was seen walking and running unsteadily past a pub and a service station and then on to a block of bars, restaurants and shops.

  7. Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr, 32, has been charged with abduction

Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr, 32, the last person seen with her, has been charged with abduction with intent to defile her.

The area where her remains were found is six miles (10km) from where 20-year-old Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington's body was found after she vanished in 2009.

Police said forensic evidence connects Matthew to Ms Harrington's killing.

DNA also allegedly links him to a sexual assault in northern Virginia in 2005.

On Monday, he was indicted with rape and attempted murder over that case.

Matthew, who weighs 270 pounds (122kg), was an operating room technician at the university's hospital.

Friends said they were shocked the "gentle giant" could be suspected of murder.

Egypt Declares Emergency After Sinai Attack

A three-month state of emergency has come into force in parts of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula after a suicide car bomb attack killed more than 30 soldiers.

The bombing on Friday was carried out by a suspected jihadist who rammed a checkpoint with his explosives-packed vehicle, security officials said.

The attack, in an agricultural area northwest of El Arish, the main town in north Sinai, killed 33 soldiers and left more over 25 injured, medics said.

A senior army official and five officers were said to be among those wounded.

State-run TV said clashes between troops and militants followed the bombing, without providing further details.

Video: What Could Egypt Do About I.S.?

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said: "I strongly condemn today's terrorist attack in North Sinai, which has led to such a tragic loss of life.

"We stand with the Egyptian government in their fight against terrorism. There can never be a justification for such actions.

"I will be offering my personal condolences to Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri when we meet on Monday in London and look forward to discussing practical cooperation to tackle terrorism during our talks."

The Egyptian presidency said the three-month emergency measures would include a daily curfew from 5pm to 7am.

The decision was also taken to close the Rafah crossing into the Gaza Strip, the only route into the Palestinian territory not controlled by Israel.

Video: Egypt's 'Crime Against Humanity'

"The army and the police will take all necessary measures to tackle the dangers of terrorism and its financing, to preserve the security of the region... and protect the lives of citizens," the presidential decree said.

President Abdel Fattah al Sisi also claimed that external support had been given to the attackers.

"It is very important to know the motives behind this operation," he said.

"Let me tell you first of all that there are external motives behind this operation. External support was given to those who undertook this operation against the Egyptian army, as we've seen.

"Why? Pay attention, I'm talking to all Egyptians. This was done to break the will of Egypt and the Egyptians. This was done to break the will of the army."

Video: Middle East: Egypt

Militants also shot dead an officer and wounded two soldiers on Friday at another checkpoint south of El Arish, security officials said.

Jihadists in the peninsula have killed scores of policemen and soldiers since Islamist president Mohammed Morsi was overthrown to avenge a police crackdown on his supporters.

President Abdel Fattah al Sisi, the army chief who toppled Mr Morsi and later won elections, has pledged to eradicate the militants.

Automatic Quarantine In US For Ebola Medics

New York, New Jersey and Illinois are to begin automatically quarantining medical staff who return from areas badly affected by Ebola.

The decision by the health authorities follows former Doctors Without Borders medic Craig Spencer testing positive for the disease several days after he returned from Guinea.

The World Health Organisation says the number of Ebola deaths has risen to 4,922 and the total cases passed the 10,000 mark at 10,141, mostly in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Dr Spencer, 33, was able to travel on the subway and go bowling before he showed the classic symptoms of the virus and had to go to hospital.

The US government said it was considering adopting the move for the whole country after it emerged that Dr Spencer had already been checked at the border and declared safe.

Video: Ebola Response: Science Not Fear

Hours after the policy was announced, a female healthcare worker who had been quarantined when she arrived from the affected region into Newark Liberty International Airport, New Jersey, was isolated with a fever.

Preliminary tests have come back negative for the Ebola virus, but the woman continues to be monitored at University Hospital, Newark.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said. "We've seen what happens... You ride a subway. You ride a bus. You could infect hundreds and hundreds of people."

Video: Cured Texas Ebola Nurse 'Blessed'

President Barack Obama praised New York City's quick reaction to its first Ebola case and said he has promised local officials any federal help they need.

He said the US must be guided by science and not fear as it responded to Ebola, insisting the disease can be beaten if people remain vigilant.

The president also sought to reassure members of the public by hugging Dallas nurse Nina Pham, who was one of the first to be treated for the virus in the US.

Video: Ebola: Busting The Myths

She had caught it while working as one of the medical staff treating a man who had earlier arrived from Liberia and who later died of the disease.

Ms Pham, 26, was declared cured on Friday, and gave a speech, thanking those who had treated her.

She said: "I feel fortunate and blessed to be standing here today."

Video: How Ebola Attacks The Human Body

Officials said she did not take any experimental drugs, but she did use blood plasma from previous survivor Dr Kent Brantly, who she also thanked.

Her colleague Amber Vinson, who caught the disease at the same time, was also declared cured, but was not yet well enough to leave hospital.

Dr Spencer remains in a stable condition in an isolation ward at Bellevue Hospital in New York undergoing treatment.

The latest case comes as the World Health Organisation announced that it expects hundreds of thousands of doses of a new Ebola vaccine to be available by early next year.

Woman Hanged In Iran Despite Retrial Campaign

A woman has been executed in Iran after being convicted of murdering a man who she claimed was trying to rape her.

Reyhaneh Jabbari, 27, was hanged in a Tehran prison despite an international campaign to stop the execution.

She was sentenced to death in 2009 for killing former intelligence agent Morteza Abdolali Sarbandi.

But Amnesty International said she had been convicted after a "deeply flawed" investigation and trial.

She apparently admitted to stabbing him in the back but said another man also in the house killed him, according to the human rights organisation.

Amnesty said her claims do not appear to have ever been properly investigated and it had called for a retrial.

A Facebook page, with more than 17,000 likes, was set up to try to save her from execution - it now says Rest In Peace.

Her execution had been put off several times, including in the last month.

Britain has said it is "concerned and saddened" by the execution.

Foreign Office minister Tobias Ellwood said there were "questions around due process" in the case and that such actions would not help Iran improve relations with the rest of the world.

Amnesty spokeswoman Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui said: "The shocking news that Reyhaneh Jabbari has been executed is deeply disappointing in the extreme.

"This is another bloody stain on Iran's human rights record.

"Tragically, this case is far from uncommon. Once again Iran has insisted on applying the death penalty despite serious concerns over the fairness of the trial."

Jabbari was hanged at dawn on Saturday for premeditated murder, the official IRNA news agency reported.

It quoted the court ruling as rejecting the attempted rape claim and saying all evidence proved Jabbari had plotted to kill the victim.

The court ruling said she stabbed him in 2007 after buying a knife two days earlier.

The execution was carried out after his family refused to pardon Jabbari or accept blood money.
