France Attackers: What We Know So Far

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 10 Januari 2015 | 23.17

Three of the group were killed by SWAT teams and the remaining suspect is now the most wanted woman in France.

We take a look at what is known about the people who carried out the Charlie Hebdo massacre and ended their stand with two dramatic hostage situations.

Cherif Kouachi, 32 - Killed By Police

:: Killed 12 people with his brother during their massacre at the offices of Paris satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

:: While surrounded by SWAT teams, told French broadcaster BFM he had trained with Yemen-based Al Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula:

"I, Cherif Kouachi was sent by al Qaeda in Yemen, and I went there and it's (radical US-born cleric) Sheikh Anwar al Awlaki who financed me."

The group backed up his account and claimed it had directed the attack.

:: Also "passed through" an Algerian jihadist network in the 1990s, according to police union spokesman Christophe Crepin.

:: Jailed in 2008 for recruiting people to fight for al Qaeda against US forces in Iraq. Served half of a three-year jail sentence.

:: Reportedly mentored by Djamel Beghal, an al Qaeda terrorist, once based at London's Finsbury Park mosque and who had close links with radical cleric Abu Hamza.

Judicial documents say in 2010 Kouachi and his girlfriend travelled to southern France with Amedy Coulibaly and Hayat Boumeddiene to visit Beghal.

:: Had been an aspiring rapper who briefly featured in a TV documentary.

:: "Cherif was a very good guy but I lost him two or three years ago," Paris imam Mehdi Bouzid told the BBC's Today programme..

"Two weeks ago he was with my father, praying in the 19th district of Paris, and he was always with a smile. I never suspected he could make this thing."

Said Kouachi, 34 - Killed By Police

:: Like his brother, also suspected of having weapons training in Yemen with the al Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula group.

Stayed in the country from 2011 until 2012, according to security officials in the country.

:: Was on a US and UK terror 'watch list' (along with his brother), flagging them up as a potential danger. Britain also had them on a no-fly list to stop them entering the country.

Amedy Coulibaly, 32 - Killed By Police

:: Shot and killed a policewoman the day after the Charlie Hebdo attack, then killed four hostages 24 hours later at a kosher supermarket in Paris.

:: Told French network BFM during the siege that he was affiliated with Islamic State, reportedly telling the hostages: "They [the West] must stop attacking the Islamic State, stop unveiling our women, stop putting our brothers in prison for nothing at all."

:: Berated the hostages for paying taxes and supporting the French state. According to radio station RTL, he told them: "It is you who is financing (the government). You pay taxes."

:: Claimed he had coordinated the attacks with the Kouachi brothers - but only to "kick-start things: so when they started Charlie Hebdo, I started on the police officers".

:: Met Cherif Kouachi during one of several spells in prison and they saw each other frequently, according to a transcript of a police interview seen by Journal du Dimanche.

:: A crossbow, 240 rounds of ammunition and letters seeking false documents were found during a search of his apartment in 2010.

:: Sentenced to five years in jail in 2013 for planning a prison escape for an Algerian Islamist who bombed the Paris underground in 1995. Served only two months.

Search teams looking for wreckage from the crashed AirAsia flight QZ8501 have pulled the tail section from the sea - but it is not clear if the black box recorders are inside.

TV footage showed a part of the tail being lifted on to a ship, two weeks ago after the plane went down in the Java Sea, killing all 162 people on board.

The Airbus jet went missing in stormy weather on 28 December as it flew from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore.

The tail was found in the seabed 30m (100 feet) below the surface and was lifted on to a ship using giant floating balloons and a crane.

Navy spokesman Manahan Simorangkir said: "We have lifted the tail on to the ship. It's red and white and a big part of the AirAsia logo can be seen."

SpaceX Bid To Reuse Rocket Ends In Pieces

The SpaceX company has successfully launched a fresh load of supplies to the International Space Station but its attempt to land the leftover booster on a barge did not fare as well.

SpaceX's billionaire founder Elon Musk says the first stage of the unmanned Falcon rocket made it to the platform floating some 200 miles off Florida's northeastern coast.

But he says the booster came down too hard and broke apart.

It is the first time anyone has tried anything like this.

According to Mr Musk: "Close but no cigar this time." But he says it bodes well for the future.

The Falcon rocket was launched at Cape Canaveral at 9:47 GMT.

The primary mission for SpaceX is delivering more than 2,300 kilograms (5,000 pounds) of food, experiments and other items to the orbiting space station.

Tuesday's scheduled launch of the Dragon cargo ship was aborted due to rocket trouble.

Petraeus Could Face Criminal Charges - Report

The FBI and Justice Department prosecutors have recommended bringing criminal charges against former CIA chief David Petraeus, according to the New York Times.

The Justice Department investigation focuses on whether Mr Petraeus gave Paula Broadwell, a woman he admitted having an extramarital affair with, access to his CIA email account and other highly classified information.

Previously, Mr Petraeus has said he did not provide classified information to Ms Broadwell, who was writing his biography at the time of their relationship.

A spokesman for Mr Petraeus, who served as commander of American forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan, said the retired general had no comment on the latest claims.

Officials have recommended felony charges, the newspaper reported.

The recommendations leave the US Attorney General Eric Holder with a decision to make on whether to seek an indictment against Mr Petraeus, who quit his CIA post in 2012 after the extramarital affair became publicly known.

Mr Petraeus has indicated to the Justice Department that he has no interest in a plea deal that would enable him to avoid a trial, the newspaper said.

US Senator John McCain, a leading Republican voice on national security issues and an ally of Mr Petraeus, in December sent a letter to Mr Holder expressing concern about the Justice Department's handling of the investigation.

"I cannot ignore the broader concerns raised by the fact that this investigation apparently remains unresolved nearly two years later and that the only information that has come to light is through leaks by unnamed sources within the US intelligence community with knowledge of the matter," Mr McCain wrote.

An FBI spokesman declined to comment on the report and the Justice Department has not not yet responded to a request for comment.

An employee at the printing business besieged by the Charlie Hebdo attackers was able to help police kill the terrorists after texting tactical information to them.

The 26-year-old graphic designer, who has been named in reports as Lilian Lepere, took refuge "under a sink in the canteen" upstairs at the business in Dammartin-en-Goele, according to Paris prosecutor Francois Molins.

Brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi were holed up there after killing 12 people at the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and going on the run.

A source told the AFP news agency Mr Lepere was "terrified".

But despite this, he managed to remain undetected and began communicating with police outside via text message.

A print firm boss taken hostage by the Charlie Hebdo killers has told Sky News how he told a colleague to hide, in an act of heroism which helped police capture the fugitives.

Cherif and Said Kouachi turned up at the factory on their third day on the run after killing 12 people at the satirical magazine in Paris on Wednesday.

Michel Catalano described how he told an employee to hide in the back of the building when he saw the gunmen arriving from the window.

Unknown to the terrorist brothers, the man, named as Lilian Lepere, secretly texted information to police while hiding in under a sink before forces stormed the building on an industrial estate in Dammartin-en-Goele, north of Paris.

Mr Catalano, who said he did not expect to live, told how he was "terrified" throughout the ordeal that the brothers would discover the hidden worker.

He had been preparing for an ordinary day of business when the doorbell rang at around 8.30am.

He said: "I could see from a window that there was a man with a rocket launcher and a Kalashnikov.

"I could immediately see there was a situation of danger. I told my employee to hide. I knew two of us couldn't hide.

Police are hunting for the girlfriend of one of the three gunmen who brought three days of terror to France, saying she may be "armed and dangerous".

Hayat Boumeddiene, a suspect in the murder of a Paris policewoman on Thursday, is on the run after her partner Amedy Coulibaly was killed when armed officers brought his kosher supermarket siege to a violent end.

The 26-year-old could hold the key to the ongoing terror investigation, as police admit they could be dealing with a larger extremist cell and al Qaeda threaten more attacks.

Details are emerging of the young woman of Algerian descent and the links between Coulibaly, 32, and the Kouachi brothers, who were killed two days after murdering 12 people at the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo

Boumeddiene and the wife of one of the brothers exchanged more than 500 phone calls in 2014, according to Paris prosecutor Francois Molins.

She reportedly started wearing a niqab in May 2009 after meeting Coulibaly and was sacked from her job as a cashier.
